One definition of numeracy might describe it as a basic set of general mathematical skills that enable an individual to function in specific personal, work and societal situations. However, it is clear that the term numeracy is currently the subject of international debate in terms of its definition and function within mathematics. You can read an exploration of this topic by Diana Coben, of the NRDC, in the June 2005 newsletter of Maths4Life.
